August 2008
It was particularly good this week. Then again, it always is.
I blame some of my current sensibilities on this and Locust Abortion Technician both of which dovetailed with the discovery of hash back in my adolesence.
Butthole Surfers - John E. Smoke
Considering you can now say “douchebag” in primetime, and there are bands with names like Pissed Jeans, Fuck Buttons and Anal Cunt (okay that one is pretty old), it’s amazing that there ever was a time when a name as purile and goofy as the Butthole Surfers would be deamed offensive and unfit for print. Shit, just 12 years ago, when the Surfers performed their one and only #1 hit “Pepper” on Letterman, he had to introduce the band as the B.H. Surfers to appease network censors.
Anyway, I had a nostaligia fest earlier today with the first girl I ever dated (side note, it’s crazy to think that that was over a decade ago!), in which the Butthole Surfers came up, and I’ve been listening to them since. “John E. Smoke”, from their final release on Touch n Go, Hairway to Steven, is fucking awesome. I tried to memorize the intro, but I failed. I get too tongue tied.
Fire Hydrant - Trim
Inspired by this post:
Wiley - Stop Bein Silly (Dizzee Rascal Diss)In ascending order:
Diz, Crazy T, Wiley, but it’s the unsung: Trim. Yardie flow poet….
You know, I have literally not listened to her in a good 3 years. Oversaturation. Nice reminder, tho of the mopey indie rock days when everyone was sad and every second song had a string quartet or cello in it. Total “post-breakup glimmer of hope/recovery while laid out flat on your back” song. Sigh. Thanx.
Maybe Not, Cat Power (“You Are Free”)
The Pentangle - Bruton Town
Woke up at 6:30 for no reason on another day off. WTF? I should be sleeping til 3 in the afternoon the way the days have been lately. PLus, rain. This album helps.
And where the hell did that search bar come from?
