Los Angeles Review of Books - Gaming The System: On The Oulipo Just discovered the Oulipo posse recently via Colin Marshall’s fantastic Notebook on Cities and Culture podcast (formerly The Marketplace of Ideas- do yourself a favor and subscribe). I’ve already been a long-time fan of Italo Calvino and now, after stumbling across Species of Spaces by Georges Perec earlier in the year, it looks like a new literary obsession is a-brewing for me. Don’t be surprised if I start playing with restraints like composing a metro poem on my next trip to Osaka. Oh yes- I’ll be meeting up with the above-mentioned Mr. Marshall while he travels in Japan in November, as interview subject (!!!), although I have no idea what to say, or what the conversation will be about, what topics/subjects I’d be keen to broach, etc- we’ll see when the tape is rolling, I guess. Expect some talk about Japan & gaijinhood (if only to get the topic out of the way), homesickness and maybe some wondering-aloud about what the hell is wrong with Vancouver. Or something? Shiranai.
