Gaijin/Haole ——> Aloha!
Yup, I’m on holiday, no wifi or TV.
One brief e-mail check a day on my sis-in-law’s computer. And really, pay AT&T roaming fees? Hell no, my phone will be a camera/walkman/recording device for the week, and fine by me.
Everyone’s out for a drive, so a brief post:
The weather is lovely, wish you were here, etc.
The landscape is amazing, the mountains are astounding, the birds and plants and flowers…wow. There’s a definite energy-hum in the land. Went whale-watching in a 16-person craft yesterday, rode back to shore in a storm. Nothing but water and grey all around…
Drives to whichever destination with the family are spent with me bookmarking trails and planning hiking/cycling excursions for the next trip, spots I want to photograph. I quite like it here, as long as I stay away from the heavy tourist spots.
To wit: Went to a luau last night and felt like I was in a Martin Parr photograph: Pasty pudgy white people looking tired & dour in aloha shirts eating buffet and watching hula. Full-on tourist hell overstimulation in that Hunter S. Thompson-via-Terry Gilliam sorta way- which means that I actually enjoyed the garishness of it all, and the mai tais were free.
Identity crisis: Canadian, married and living in Japan visiting in-laws in Hawaii: Swapping out my gaijin status card for haole status for the week. Six of one, half-dozen of the other. Glad I brought a lanyard.
Pics to follow when I get home. Lots of field recording as well.
Oh yeah, more writing up at the Liminal. Kevin McPhee’s In Circles ep on WNCL.
Hit it.
